Research and Partner information

#FutureYangu program has been created as part of an international collaborative research and intervention project, called Work Skills for Life: a Work readiness Program to prepare students for the transition from secondary school to the world of work (WoW). The program is the object of a larger survey, an impact research study, conducted during 2022-2024, with COSTECH permit No. 2022-724 NA 2020 -268.

It is implemented by the following partners

Economic Social Research Foundation (ESRF)
The Tanzanian research lead.

Norwegian School of Economics (NHH)
The Norwegian research lead.

HIP Edutainment
A Swedish foundation specializing in the design of ‘edutainment’, entertainment-education interventions. The foundation has taken the lead on the design, content and digital modality and has overseen the production of the #FutureYangu in partnership with local partners.

RUKA Creatives
A Tanzania company that specializes in radio and audio podcast production. The company has produced the digital intervention and managed the training of secondary school teachers on use of the digital program and is monitoring the delivery to schools through Master Coaches.

#FutureYangu will be hosted on the Boresha Educational Radio’s online platform under RUKA Creatives.

Fema Clubs
The media education platform, Femina HIP has produced the Fema magazine and supports extracurricular Fema clubs in government secondary schools in Tanzania. The organization is very experienced in this type of extracurricular work and Fema teacher mentors have therefore, been trained to deliver the #FutureYangu, the digital podcast intervention.

The research
#FutureYangu has been tailored to be delivered as an extracurricular material in schools that have Fema clubs. The aim is to support the access of new digital learning materials for club activities. The intervention is being surveyed for impact using a Randomized Control Trial (RCT) and other modalities. During November 2022, nearly 3000 Form 4 students and 100 teachers in 50 secondary schools in Tanga and Dodoma regions were surveyed for knowledge and attitudes around issues of work readiness. The delivery of #FutureYangu, takes place during 2023. Of the 50 schools, 25 have been randomly selected to receive the intervention while the others remain ‘control schools.’ Seven schools are located in Dodoma and 18 schools in Tanga.

To kick off the intervention, two five-day training workshops took place during February 2023, in Tanga and Dodoma engaging 50 teachers, two from each of the 25 selected secondary schools. Following this, the delivery of the 12 podcasts will take place, one a week, for three months starting May 2023. Master Coaches will monitor the delivery and research process in the field.

In 2024, about 6-10 months after delivery all 3000 students will be surveyed again, this time to assess impact of the #FutureYangu intervention, that is change in knowledge, attitudes and behavior and the applicability of this. Teachers and parents will also be surveyed, and other studies conducted.
