Drama Segment with Kim and Kish

Kim and Kish are the secondary school characters of the #FutureYangu drama segment. Their behaviour and values are typical for secondary school students and feature an amusing and creative exchange between friends, boys, and girls.

They represent opposing personalities and aspirations, reflecting gender, but also the reality facing Form 4 secondary school students from lower income backgrounds in rural government schools. In the segment they voice the concerns and challenges of youth living in the digital millennium era, moving through the Tanzanian school system to carve out a future for themselves.

Kim is tired of the rules and regulations of school and seriously doubting if he should complete Form 4. He is interested in mobile phones and the internet and aspires to work in the new technology sector. He is impatient and thinking about dropping out and moving to Dar es Salaam so he can hopefully start earning money. Kish is seriously committed to her studies because she wants a profession so that she can gain employment, earn her own money and be independent. She knows she needs to complete secondary school and get her ‘ticket’, her Form 4 certificate with a high division, to be selected to the education institutions of her choice. She aims to move on to high school and later university.

Kish knows Kim from childhood, and she cares for him. They are good friends and confide in each other. Kim flirts with Kish and jokes that she should be his girlfriend. Kish keeps him at arm’s length because she knows that getting involved with boys at her age can mean trouble. She encourages him to be serious about his schooling, he should work hard and be patient so that he can get his ‘ticket’ too. With Form 4 and a secondary school Certificate he will have more options and can find education pathways to help him pursue his dream of working in the IT sector.

In every #FutueYangu episode you the listeners will meet Kim and Kish.  Most of the time they meet in school or outside on the way to the school grounds. They discuss the topic featured in the episode and contribute with more issues and insights to help us understand some of the predicaments facing Form 4 students, girls as well as boys, as they navigate towards adulthood and the world of work.
