A Work Readiness Training Program
#FutureYangu is an extracurricular learning program using audio podcasts.
It is hosted online on the Boresha Educational Radio’s platform under RUKA Creatives Ltd.
The program consists of the #FutureYangu website and 12 half your podcasts, made accessible when the app is downloaded on a mobile smart phone. With the help of a Blutooth speaker, the material is designed to be used in a classroom during the extracurricular club hour. School leavers in Form 4 are in focus.
Teachers, Counsellors or Fema Club mentors are trained to take charge and interactively run the podcast sessions, with the students. The audio can be used ‘on demand’ when the teachers is ready, suiting their needs and timings. The audio content builds on people stories, testimonials and mirrors the voices and experiences of many young adults, some Fema clubbers, teachers, and employees.
The program tackles the challenge of those with lower divisions of academic performance who will most likely proceed to vocational and technical training and understand more about education pathways and how to navigate their way into labor markets. The importance for youth to receive their basic schooling, Form 4 Certificate is amplified –it is the Ticket to education pathways and the World of Work.
Master Coaches will visit the schools, to support and advise the teachers during the 3 months’ delivery period. They will make personal follow-up visits and set up WhatsApp groups for the teaches for more sharing.
#FutureYangu and the edutainment approach
To capture interest #FutureYangu is using an ‘edutainment’ approach, it aims to be entertaining as well as informative. The program has four segments, a testimonial, in studio conversation, drama and activities. A young woman presenter drives the conversation in studio, supported by an Aunty, a mentor and #FutureYangu coach. She represents the adult’s voice on the show, a parent of students herself she addresses the concerns of guardians and teachers, and helps ensure that discussions are in line with Tanzanian values. In studio we also meet a hustler, a worker from a specific sector sharing his or her story of pathways to occupations and jobs.
Role modelling through testimonials is key to the #FutureYangu. To share the journey of youth who have made it into the world of work, helps inspire dreams and aspirations, generate motivation and shape action. Gender issues and challenges are recurring. A drama section featuring Form 4 school students, Kim and Kich, represent youth and Fema clubbers. They discuss relevant issues and conversations are spontaneous and full of youthful language, jokes and laughter. The #FutureYangu music jingle always frames the show. Student participation is important, the Activities after every session therefore mandatory.
